It is said that the first key invented was done so by Theodore of Samos in the 6th century BC. So how has key making advanced through the ages? And how do we make keys today in the present?

Today key making consists of combining two parts of metal, the blade that slides into the lock, and the bow which is the part you turn with your fingers to open a lock. The blade of the key is usually designed to only fit one specific lock, unless the key is a master key and then it will open many different locks.

Keys come in many shapes and sizes. A house key which is the most commonly used key today can be a made to open older lever locks. The teeth or bittings on these keys are flat so this in turn makes lock picking for the locks this key opens very difficult.

The other type of house key commonly used is a newer model. Key making for this key is done with having small groves on each of the key sides. This key works by using the little teeth on the key and aligning them with notches on the lock.

Key making for car keys has become quite state of the art. Car keys can now consist of encoded inferred beams that start an ignition instead of a key. While this is usually reserved for luxury cars most car keys for modern cars are now transponder keys or chip keys.

A master key is usually made no different than any other key. It is the lock that is special in this case. The locks that a master key can open have two cylinders, one for the regular key used to open that lock and one for the master key.

Keys making becomes more advanced as technology improves but remember a key will only keep you and your valuables safe as long as you keep in a secure place.
